There were almost always dogs roaming around camp. This page is dedicated to the four-legged furry campers who left a mark (pun intended) at camp!
1. Mike Lurie and Paul Warshauer met with Loretta Kuklin in February of 2000. During that get together, Loretta described a dog that dragged her puppies across a field and into the infirmary at the White House. We don't know the breed or the circumstances of this animal, but we note that dog here.
2. Manny Desnet had 2 dogs during his ownership of camp. The first one was Bagels, a Beagle. Webmaster's note: I recall some staff members providing a malted beverage to Bagels in a water bowl. Bagels lapped it up and became visibly drunk afterwards!
3. Manny Desnet's other dog was Sheba, a Collie. Sheba followed Manny everywhere! Unfortunately, Sheba did not get along with Ray Krysh's dog, Sundance (see #4 below). These 2 often tussled and unfortunately Sheba never came out on top in any of these battles. It got to the point where Manny and Ray had to schedule their dogs' respective free time!
4. Counselor Ray Krysh had a Husky named Sundance. As previously mentioned, Sundance and Sheba really did not tolerate each other. Sundance was a very free spirited animal, yet was easy to be around and friendly. Sundance was very loyal to Ray, often bringing gifts to Ray some mornings in the form of a squirrel or chipmunk. Ray was able to teach Sundance to growl when the name "Sheba" was mentioned! After one dogfight at the waterfront between the two dogs, with the entire camp present, Sheba took a real whooping. Manny had to carry her back to the Lodge. Some devious camper or counselor made the following announcement over the Public Address system: "Attention! Attention please! Sheba, your ear can be found in the office!" That was mean.
5. Counselor Erv Kasian lived inside the Craft Shop with his dog Squeaky. Not sure what kind of dog it was. Squeaky was a male dog but had a nasty habit if humping just about everything!
6. The Wanty family lived in what was once the White House. The entire Wanty family worked at camp in some fashion, whether it was kitchen girls or cooks or maintenance. They were a daily fixture at camp from the mid 1970s until the end of camp. The first Wanty dog was Mikey, a Springer Spaniel. Mikey was always at camp and never said no to some scratches! Sadly Mikey passed away after falling through the ice on Lake Stratton one winter. RIP, Mikey!
7. The second Wanty dog after Mikey was Hantzie, the Schnauzer. One night, Hantzie must have really upset Bill Wanty, because he took after the dog in his construction van and chased Hantzie all over the golf course! Hantzie thought it was great fun, but Bill did not!
8. The house across the street from camp had a dog named Hobo. Hobo was the happiest, sweetest dog at camp! He never barked. He would wander over and would roll onto his back for belly rubs any time of the day - or night! Webmaster's note: I was the night OD one night and was making my last rounds around 11:30-ish. I came from cabin 14 around the back of Mike Euer's cabin. As I was about to turn the corner to go in front of cabin 11, a creature came from the other direction and scared the bejeebers out of me! I screamed like a girl! It was Hobo. That dog did not miss a beat. He laid on his back and I gave him his anticipated belly rubs! Hobo was very easy to deal with. If we wanted him to leave camp, all we had to do was say "go home, Hobo" and off he would go. Those were my last words to him that evening, and off he went back across the road.
