In the summer of 1962, counselors Herb Beller, Barry Shanoff and Al Steigerwald performed as "The Ramblers" at the Windmill Bar, a very popular local watering hole on Hwy 22.  Barry played banjo, Al played banjo and guitar, and Herb played guitar.  All purported to sing as well (Al Steigerwald, probably the best instrumentalist of the group, was strongly encouraged by Beller and Shanoff to lip-synch).  Their repertoire consisted mainly of Kingston Trio, Brothers Four, and Harry Belafonte songs.  It was literally a one night stand, for which the trio was paid the lofty sum of $30 (plus drinks).  The gig was advertised in the Waupaca County Post and on local radio station WDUX, which provided a bit of excitement for those cabins in which the radio was on during rest period.  An attempt to perpetuate the trio's glory with a booking at the Indian Crossing Casino (where the Everly Bros. had appeared before a SRO crowd only a year or two earlier) was unsuccessful.
Webmaster's note: the Windmill Bar changed hands several times starting in the late 1970's and is now a Chinese restaurant.  Hwy 22 was made to bypass this area in the 1980's and the road is now designated as Cty Q.  WDUX radio is AM 800, FM 92.7 in Waupaca.  The Indian Crossing Casino has enjoyed a renaissance after a period of decline in the 70's, 80's and 90's.
